About the role
National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is at the heart of energy in the UK and in meeting the governments net zero energy ambitions. We need to maintain our high standards of energy security and reliability whilst undertaking an ambitious upgrade and expansion of our transmission network to connect new renewable generation and meet new demand growth.
We need to ensure this is done in the most efficient, economic and timely way by coordinating with internal and external stakeholders regarding our investments. Infrastructure Development is a new team set up to support several new capabilities to the business.
As Strategic Investment Planning Engineer you’ll support the early stages of the investment planning and optioneering processes. This will utilise digital systems so there is a need to track various network drivers at site, circuit and regional level from across our Electricity Transmission and Strategic Infrastructure businesses. The information will then be used to make the most optimal decisions in terms of strategic intents for our assets out to 2050.
You’ll be required to work closely with our infrastructure development and asset operations teams to ensure sites with more complex needs into the future are accounted for and co-ordinated alongside other drivers to help manage risk levels on the network. You’ll also liaise with Customer Connections teams to understand customer requirements.
Summary of Key Accountabilities
- Maintain a centralised database for NGET to interrogate all investment drivers at a site, circuit and regional level, ensuring data sources used are governed with regular updates agreed with business units.
- Undertake continuous improvement alongside the digital team for network driver collation, interpretation, and application.
- Set strategic intents for sites and circuits on the network to allow more strategic level, business investment planning and managing longer term operational risk.
- Provide input and support in early project development phase.
- Support the regional strategy team to co-ordinate the investment portfolio and help find synergies and ‘whole system’ opportunities.
- Work closely with the Network Development team to quantify the transmission system requirements, optioneering, design risks for regional strategies and maintain vision of the long-term infrastructure plans.
- Provide key technical subject matter expert (SME) resource across the wider team and for external engagements such as NESO, OFGEM, and Combined Authorities.
- Act as an interface between internal and external development teams. Chair meetings to discuss strategic infrastructure optioneering.
- Maintain knowledge on the end-to-end planning processes of business requirements to deliver under the current regulatory funding deal.
- Implement approaches to ensure successful training and development of yourself and staff within Infrastructure Development, including developing a training framework, delivering training and knowledge sharing across the department.
You will be based from home with occasional travel required for meetings and site visits.
What you'll need
With a Degree in an Engineering or other numerate discipline, or a HNC combined with a substantial understanding of electrical theory, you’ll have a detailed understanding of power systems engineering, analysis and application.
Relevant experience across the UK transmission business or a related business, preferably including experience in Network Development, Project Development, or Asset Management is key as is a thorough understanding of National Grid obligations with regard to OFGEM, BEIS and other license conditions. You’ll also need a good understanding of the regulatory framework, price control processes and relevant funding mechanisms.
Strong customer relationship and networking skills with external and internal customers and stakeholders is essential as are strong communication skills with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across the business.
In addition, analytical skills, coupled with a technical aptitude with regards to business systems development is required, as is a full UK driving license.
