The opportunity


We are looking for a passionate, strategic and accomplished leader to join us as the Head of Safety to deliver a strong and deeply embedded safety focused culture across our National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) Business. 


Acting as a critical friend to the field operations team, you will be responsible for defining and delivering the business-wide safety strategy and implementing safety standards to drive safety performance across NGED. 


Showcasing your ability to inspire, manage and motivate your team, you will develop a culture of high performance and delivery against the KPIs you develop and own.  


Reporting into the Director of Safety, Health and Environment, this is a fantastic opportunity to drive change and take accountability for contract strategy and change management across the business. 


This is a hybrid working role (3 days per week at the office) and can be based in any of our license areas: East Midlands, West Midlands, South West or South Wales.
 

What you'll do

 

•    Develop NGED’s safety strategy, underpinned by robust data insights and radical approaches to improve and sustain an industry leading safety culture and performance. 
•    Support NGED operational teams by maintaining a suitably resourced team and driving a high performing safety team, with dedicated Subject Matter Experts’s to deliver advisory and drive safety performance at the most critical areas across field operations.
•    Lead the development, embedding and sustaining of a purposeful and impactful culture change program across NGED to enable a deeper culture of compliance and deepening psychological safety for all colleagues and our delivery partners. 
•    Manage NGED’s Safety governance processes, with effective interactions with wider NG Group processes. 
•    Define and implement robust performance measures with seamless reporting processes to the business, to drive safety insights, monitor and report on NGED safety performance trends. 

 

About you


•    Effective leadership skills with the ability to develop a high performing team – someone who identifies and leverages strengths and potential within the team and creates cohesion across different functional areas.
•    Proven experience in directing organisational safety change programs. 
•    Detailed understanding and appreciation of operational safety risks and controls within the electricity distribution industry.  
•    An exceptional communicator, with the people skills to build effective relationships at all levels of business up to ExCo level and with external contacts – suppliers.
•    A relentless passion and drive for safety performance and culture. 
•    Knowledge of the Energy Sector and National Grid’s place in the industry.  
•    Resilient with the confidence and strength to question behaviours and issues.
•    Well-developed collaboration skills to ensure effective cooperation between all parties.

A competitive salary between  £70,000 - £90,000 dependent on experience.
