Salary: Up to £65K

Contract type: Full-time. We offer flexibility of working hours and location.

Location: Bristol (hybrid) We ask all team members to come into the office at least 3 x per quarter.

What you'll be doing:

As an Engineering Team Manager, you will manage and grow a team of talented engineers, focusing primarily on people - their development, motivation, and performance. You'll help shape how we work and scale as a team, creating an environment where engineers thrive, collaborate effectively, and deliver their best work.

While you'll remain close to the technical side, your success will be measured by how your team grows, performs, and evolves, not by your own coding output.

You'll work closely with the Head of Engineering to strengthen our structure, ensure alignment with business goals, and support the professional growth of every engineer in your team.

Lead, mentor and coach a team of engineers - guiding them through challenges, supporting their growth, and fostering a culture of trust and accountability
Shape the environment where engineers can do their best work - improving clarity, removing blockers, and helping teams deliver consistently
Partner with other Team Managers to align priorities, identify cross-squad dependencies, and ensure consistency across engineering
Working closely with our Talent Acquisition team to attract and hire great people - helping shape role descriptions, participating in interviews, and ensuring new hires are onboarded effectively.
Own your team's development conversations, competency reviews, and personal development plans, ensuring progression and recognition are fair and transparent
Build strong relationships with Product and other stakeholders to translate business goals into clear, achievable outcomes
Help shape and maintain engineering standards - technical quality, secure development practices, and a culture of continuous improvement
Champion change - modernising how we deliver software and fostering a mindset of learning, feedback, and innovation

Our ideal candidate:

People and leadership

Deeply people-focused - you take pride in seeing others grow, learn, and succeed
Proven experience managing and developing engineers at different levels
Skilled in coaching, feedback, and performance conversations
Experienced in using competency frameworks and PDPs to guide growth and progression
Able to build high-performing teams, set clear expectations, and maintain accountability
Strong communicator - able to translate between technical and non-technical audiences, bringing clarity and alignment
Comfortable driving cultural and process change that improves how teams work together

Technical understanding

Solid foundation in software engineering - ideally with experience in PHP (Laravel), Vue.js, and AWS (ECS, EC2, RDS, SQS, Lambda), or similar technologies
Understands modern development practices - CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and version control
Pragmatic approach to technical decision-making - focusing on value, quality, and delivery

Compliance awareness

Understanding of standards such as Cyber Essentials, ISO 27001, SOC II, or GDPR, and their implications for secure development and delivery

Our interview process

Our interview process is designed to be straightforward and respectful of your time while giving you the chance to show us how you think and work, and help us learn more about you.

Initial chat - an informal conversation with the Head of Engineering and Principal Engineer. This is a chance to learn more about Signable, the role, and to share your background and motivations. This is also your opportunity to ask us questions and see if Signable is the right fit for you - 45 to 60 mins.
Project stage (paid) - you'll be invited to complete a realistic project, reflecting the kind of challenges you'd face in the role. This is a paid exercise, to recognise your time and effort. You'll submit your work ahead of the next stage - 3 to 4 hours.
Final interview - a deeper conversation with the engineering leadership team where you'll walk us through your project, discuss your approach, and explore your leadership style. This is also your opportunity to ask us any further questions you may have - 45 to 60 mins.

Occasionally, for some candidates we may also arrange a short chemistry call with a few team members you would work directly with. This is informal and designed to give both you and the team a sense of how working together might feel.
