Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced HPC DC Facilities Manager to join our High-Performance Computing (HPC) team. This role is responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, reliability, and strategic oversight of critical data center infrastructure and supporting facility systems.
The successful candidate will lead all aspects of data center facilities management, including the maintenance and optimization of electrical, mechanical, cooling, plumbing, fire protection, and building automation systems. Working closely with the Site Facilities Manager, IT Operations, internal stakeholders, and external service providers, the Data Center Facilities Manager will develop maintenance strategies, drive operational excellence, and ensure compliance with company standards and industry best practices.
This position requires a proven leader who can balance long-term strategic planning with day-to-day operational management, while working with piers and teams in other departments, ensuring maximum uptime, efficiency, capacity, and reliability while maintaining cost-effective operations.
This role will report to the Data Center Manager who also supervises HPC services, hardware and computer operations.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Infrastructure Management
- Oversee all aspects of the data center’s critical physical infrastructure, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
- Develop and implement preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance strategies in alignment with company standards and operational requirements.
- Ensure all work performed within the data center environment is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established change management processes, without impacting customers or business operations.
- Maintain operational readiness and reliability of critical systems, including:
- Electrical distribution systems
- Generators and fuel systems
- UPS systems and battery plants
- Switchgear and transfer switches
- Chilled water and cooling systems
- CRAH/CRAC units
- Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems
- Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS)
- General data center facility infrastructure and support equipment
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a 24x7 team of facilities engineers and technicians.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
- Establish performance expectations, provide coaching and development opportunities, and ensure team readiness through skills development and training programs.
- Support workforce planning, succession planning, and career development initiatives.
Vendor & Contractor Management
- Manage relationships with vendors, contractors, and service providers.
- Develop and administer maintenance contracts and service agreements.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure contractor performance and accountability.
- Coordinate daily activities with multiple subcontractors and service providers.
Strategic Planning & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to the development and evolution of company data center infrastructure standards.
- Identify and implement reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and cost-reduction initiatives.
- Lead infrastructure upgrades, capital improvement projects, and operational enhancement programs from concept through execution.
- Collaborate with IT Operations and business stakeholders to align facility capabilities with organizational objectives.
Financial Management
- Develop, manage, and optimize operating and maintenance budgets.
- Monitor expenditures and ensure cost-effective utilization of resources while maintaining reliability and service quality.
- Support capital planning, forecasting, and business case development for facility investments.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced certifications in electrical, mechanical, HVAC, or related disciplines; or
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Facilities Management, Construction Management, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in critical facilities or data center operations with responsibility for building systems and infrastructure.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a management role with direct leadership responsibility.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Extensive experience managing mission-critical facilities and data center environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis capabilities with the ability to solve complex operational issues.
- Comprehensive knowledge of critical facility systems, including:
- Utility power distribution
- Transformers and switchgear
- Generator systems
- UPS and battery systems
- Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS)
- Power Distribution Units (PDU)
- Chillers, pumps, and HVAC infrastructure
- CRAH/CRAC units
- VRF systems
- Demonstrated success managing third-party service providers, maintenance contracts, and performance metrics.
- Strong understanding of preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance programs.
- Ability to develop and maintain detailed operational procedures, documentation, and issue-tracking systems.
- Proven ability to maintain operational SLAs through proactive monitoring, issue detection, and corrective action.
- Track record of building, developing, and retaining high-performing technical teams.
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize effectively and make sound decisions in a fast-paced, high-availability environment.
