NUMBER OF DIRECT REPORTS
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
- The Head of Cloud is accountable for defining and executing a multi-cloud strategy, leading multi-cloud infrastructure platforms and driving Cloud adoption across MUFG
- The role holder will lead a team of 8 direct reports and establish a product management style cloud operating model to enable modernisation of ways of working and a shift to reuseable, standardised infrastructure services
- The role holder will work extensively and collaboratively with colleagues in EMEA and across the globe to lead Azure, Oracle Cloud, and AWS offerings to deliver next generation Cloud technological solutions to MUFG business lines to support MUFG goals and objectives
- The role holder will be the subject matter expert in cloud – preferably across Azure, Amazon Web Services and Oracle – having extensive experience of working with external cloud vendors and internal and external cloud solutions
- The role holder will lead, educate and evangelise the use of cloud across MUFG to facilitate MUFG’s goals to modernise, reduce technology legacy debt, reduce technology and cyber risk, increase efficient and cost-effective adoption of AI, and rationalisation of applications and infrastructure.
- The role holder will be accountable and responsible for all cloud implementation and launch service offerings including communications, education and service readiness. They will own and lead the investment planning and financial governance of cloud related projects and programmes
- The role holder will own and manage the cost of cloud technologies and associated budget, licensing and vendor relationships to ensure cost efficiency, optimisation and Return on Investment
- The role holder will work with Head of Platform Engineering to deliver a reliable, robust, sustainable, scalable and efficient operating model by leveraging best practices
- This role is an integral part of the department’s evolution and requires a blend of deep technical Cloud and engineering expertise, robust regulatory compliance knowledge alongside strong senior leadership skills.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Planning & Strategy
- Own and execute a comprehensive multi-cloud strategy directionally aligned to the MUFG cloud strategy at a global level. This role will be accountable for defining a technical roadmap for cloud that supports Business growth and strategy and enables modernisation of the EMEA technology stack and reduction of the physical data centre footprint
- Accountable for designing, developing and supporting a world class product aligned cloud service across Azure, Oracle cloud and AWS, leading strong engineering disciple to deliver secure, scalable and sustainable patterns for MUFG
- Owns the vision, roadmap and operations of a product aligned cloud team balancing stability, scalability, innovation, data sovereignty and regulatory requirements
- Provide leadership and subject matter expertise on cloud technologies and adoption of these across multiple regions and business lines to support the ongoing modernisation of the function, staying ahead of cloud technological advancements through knowledge and experience through internal and external networks
- Own and develop cloud vendor relationships – ensuring world class levels of service for MUFG
- Own and development of cloud first principles and framework – working closely with EMEA, regional and global technical architecture committees e.g. GTAG
- Identify and lead opportunities for innovation utilising cloud – supporting the organisational goals to modernise, reduce technology legacy debt, reduce technology and cyber risk, efficient and cost-effective adoption of AI, rationalisation of applications and infrastructure. Identify opportunities and implement strategies for efficiency enhancement, functionalities and service quality improvement, whilst adopting technology advancements
- Own and lead the investment planning and financial governance of cloud related projects and programmes
- Own and establish the engagement with the Business lines to promote and champion the use of cloud across MUFG, building trusted relationships with the Business to support them in their strategic goals inline with the cost/investment and environmental targets that they are operating within. Own and lead the implementation and launch of cloud offerings including communications, education and service readiness
- Identify and evangelize new cloud use cases and business opportunities enabled by the wider cloud and Platform Engineering team
- Accountable for building a team of cloud engineers and subject matter experts to support external and internal cloud alignment, ensuring that their technical expertise is developed in line with industry and cloud vendor strategies, relevant and up to date
- Establish and lead cloud product ways of working and teams to support the shift to reusable, standardised infrastructure services
- Work with Head of Platform Engineering to deliver a reliable, robust, sustainable, scalable and efficient operating model by leveraging best practices
- Own and manage the cost of cloud technologies and associated budget, licensing and vendor relationships to ensure cost efficiency, optimisation and Return on Investment
Operational Excellence, Platform and Product Management and Governance
- Accountable for managing all aspects of the public cloud platform for Iaas, PaaS and Saas. This includes architectural design and guidance, liaising with application teams, implementing solutions for and alongside application teams, and monitoring and supporting the cloud services and resources
- Identify opportunities and implement cloud solutions for efficiency enhancement, functionalities and service quality improvement
- Accountable for the design, execute and support cloud & hybrid cloud proof of concept deployments, based on Digital Engineering Services and Solutions strategy and/or business use cases
- Accountable for building and implementing cloud ecosystem that is robust, secure and resilient and supports MUFG’s operational resilience requirements both for the business and regulators
- Accountable for complex, large scale cloud implementations, ensuring quality, security and compliance
- Manage successful cloud platform and product upgrades, technical debt and ensure adherence to best practice
- Own and oversee the health, performance and operational integrity of cloud platforms and products. managing a team of cloud professionals and engineers to oversee day-to-day operations, incident response, and automation, reducing downtime and operational bottlenecks
- Lead any technical escalations or cloud related incident responses with the goal of minimising any service disruption within cloud technologies. Investigate potential and actual service problems that may arise from cloud implementation and recommend solutions. Follow formal procedures to plan and test proposed solutions
- Accountable for ensuring that sufficient capacity is available to accommodate expected growth in all managed cloud platforms
- Accountable for ensuring a highly available, reliable and performant cloud infrastructure is developed, maintained and supported to meet the business needs for availability, performance and control under a 24 by 7 support.
- Accountable for cloud infrastructure architecture aligning to the business, information and application architectures
- Accountable for ensuring accurate reporting of all key performance indicators for the cloud systems and tooling
- Accountable for the cloud team providing expert advice in relation to system development, migration and integration of cloud-based solutions, including the operational and maintenance aspects of systems under development, and proposed system recovery procedures.
- Identify key risks within the cloud team, assessing and mitigating those risks in accordance with the appropriate risk management framework
- Ensure the cloud team operates in a controlled way in accordance with standard procedures by adhering to related security and compliance procedures
- Interpret relevant regulatory, requirements and security, design and technical best practices and translate these to business aligned cloud programme requirements. In conjunction with EMEA Technology Risk, Security and Control, ensure that all regulatory requirements are fully complied with, including DORA assessments and appropriate defences and controls are in place to deal with all cyber risks
- Accountable for the definition, documentation and safe technical execution of cloud projects, working closely with the allocated Programme / Project Manager. Actively participating in all phases of the project. Provide cloud technical expertise to Project Managers to ensure that requirements and quality plans are prepared and maintained and tracked accordingly
- Manage the technical delivery of projects within the agreed technical scope, cost and timescale across Bank and Securities

WORK EXPERIENCE
Essential:
- Proven and extensive experience of leading enterprise cloud Engineering teams within Financial Services
- Proven experience with various vendor cloud providers – desirable AWS, Azure, Oracle
- Experience of designing and implementing solutions with the following Cloud technologies: AWS, Azure and Oracle Cloud
- Deep Cloud Engineering experience including Infrastructure‑as‑Code
- Real‑world experience implementing and supporting cloud platforms and identity solutions (Azure, Oracle, Entra ID).
- Proven experience in designing innovative business solutions and a track record in delivery of successful Cloud Implementation projects. Experience in managing the technical cloud delivery for multiple workstreams with broad scope, ambiguity, and high degree of difficulty
- Strong stakeholder and business relationship background. Extensive and successful experience for communicating the "why" behind cloud adoption, managing business expectations and experience to ensure the cloud transformation meets both technical and business objectives
- Strong Infrastructure delivery background with evidence of successful technical cloud delivery across multiple workstreams
- Demonstrable experience of senior stakeholder management (MD and C level) and relevant management reporting.
- Ability to coach team members and stakeholders through technical knowledge transfer and constructive feedback to address issues ranging from maintenance and performance to high visibility issues impacting manage users
- Experience in working in a high-pressure environment to deliver first class services.
- Solid analytical/problem-solving skills with capability to identify solutions to unusual and complex problems
- Experience in project and development methodologies. Experience planning and prioritising multiple work streams in response to rapidly developing and changing portfolios
