Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Substation - Southwest England

About the Role

As a Mechanical & Electrical Fitter – Substation, you will be required to live within the area between Bristol, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire as you will support our 6 sites and 2 cable routes within the Southwest Severn region. The Mechanical & Electrical Fitter – Substation will generally be working in a team of 2 to 10 people and be involved with maintenance, refurbishment or replacement work on Electricity Substations from single asset replacements such as circuit breakers and transformers to maintaining and repairing aging high speed on load tap changers or complex 400kV circuit breakers. We also work on all kinds of ancillary equipment, DC battery systems, air compressors and diesels etc. Electricity Substations are a crucial element of electricity supply in this country which are inherently hazardous environments. National Grid will provide the guidance, training and suitable levels of supervision while you get to grips with all the requirements of working safely and efficiently within this environment. Training is completed at our National Training Centre at Eakring in Nottingham, along with many smaller local courses being provided to get the best potential out of our staff.

Key Responsibilities:

•    Install, refurbish, maintain, fault investigate/repair and condition monitor 
•    Give early escalation to the Project Leader or Line Manager of variances to the plan 
•    Ensure work is in line with assigned standard job times and unit costs 
•    Drive safe collaborative working practices and accurate cost capture using outage hubs  
•    Carry out roles as defined in ‘Competent Person’ 
•    Carry out the roles of ‘Person in Charge’ (PIC)  
•    Carry out nominated statutory and mandatory duties  
•    Eliminate accidents through risk assessments, method statements, hazard awareness and reporting 
•    Provide mentoring and/or training to less experienced staff 
•    Utilise systems to record and access data in an accurate and timely manner 
•    Carry out a lead role within the team

About You

Essential:

•    A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK
•    Engineering level 3 qualification or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship
•    Significant post qualification on the tools Mechanical or Electrical engineering experience
•    Experience of working to safety procedures
•    Competency with Microsoft Suites including Word and Office

Desirable:

•    Experience of RAMS and/or method statements
•    Substation experience
•    Experience of working on transmission equipment
•    Experience of working at heights and/or confined spaces
