About the Role

Substation Craftsperson - Peripatetic

You will be working in the Warwickshire Team. Due to the nature of our work, we’re looking for you to live somewhere within 1 hour of either, Halesowen, Oldbury, Feckenham, Bishops Wood, Coventry or Coleshill.

Substations are a crucial element of electricity supply system in this country. Safety Culture, HV Transmission Substations are inherently hazardous environments, National Grid has extremely high safety standards that team members generally find comfortable working to.

You’ll generally be working in a team of 2 to 10 people and be involved with maintenance, refurbishment or replacement work on electricity substations. This could be from single asset replacements such as circuit breakers and transformers to maintaining/repairing aging high speed on load tap changers or complex 400kV circuit breakers. We also work on all kinds of ancillary equipment, DC battery systems, air compressors, diesels etc.

What you'll be getting up to

Carry out installation, refurbishment, maintenance, fault investigation/repair and condition monitoring across all substation plant and equipment.
Carry out roles as defined in National Grid’s Safety Rules of ‘Competent Person’.
Proactively work towards eliminating all accidents by adopting risk assessment techniques, method statements and being aware of potential hazards and reporting all near misses.
Provide mentoring and/or training to less experienced staff, regardless of grade.
Carry out a lead role within the team i.e. Lifting Equipment management or PPE budget

About You

Some of the key skill areas we look for are Mechanical, Electrical, Hydraulic, Pneumatic, Safety Procedures, Working at Height, Lifting Operations, Panel Wiring, and Fault Finding. It is not necessary that a successful candidate requires all of the above skillsets, but a wide breadth of knowledge would be beneficial. Prior knowledge/experience within the electricity supply industry would be beneficial but not a requirement. On job and formal training will be available for development purposes

A minimum Level NVQ3 Apprenticeship in electrical or mechanical engineering is required.
A Full UK Driving Licence.
Substation experienced – Desirable.
IOSH – Desirable.
