Job Details:
We are looking for a talent and motivated PhD intern to join our team in Oslo.
The position is a 3-year Industrial PhD program sponsored by the Research Council of Norway and Viridien focussing on DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) from the physics of this novel sensing technology to processing and imaging.
About the Role:
This is a unique opportunity to work alongside Viridien's R&D experts, with collaboration from the DAS experts at ASN (Alcatel Submarine Networks) and the prestigious NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology). The PhD intern will gain invaluable hands-on experience and research training while working towards a PhD degree.
Application deadline: 26th February 2025
About the Project:
The project is a collaboration between Viridien, NTNU and its Center for Geophysical Forecasting and Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) fiber optical research center in Trondheim, Norway.
DAS is ramping up to be an important new tool for low-cost, opportunistic monitoring and imaging for new-energy solutions, such as for CO2 storage or offshore installations. The working title of the Ph. D program is “Towards improved imaging and detection using Distributed Acoustic Sensing in marine environments”.
The work will consist in research in detailed mechanisms on how acoustic and elastic waves are recorded by the DAS system, and on ways to correct for distortions, suppress noise and utilize the single-component data from DAS in an optimal way in imaging and monitoring in marine environments. The results will be documented in a number of scientific papers authored by the Ph.D candidate and published in renowned international journals.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking candidates with a strong passion for technological innovation, a deep understanding of technical concepts, and a drive to explore new knowledge. Ideal candidates will possess a keen interest in research and development, particularly in the fields of geophysics, physics, and applied sciences.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in one of the following disciplines: Geophysics, Mathematics, Physics, Astrophysics/Astronomy, Earth Sciences, or Natural Sciences with a Physics specialization.
Location
This position will be primarily based at the Viridien office in Oslo, with some time spent at NTNU for academic coursework and at ASN’s research labs in Trondheim for hands-on experimental work and further learning about DAS systems and interrogators.
Start Date
The anticipated start date is between Q3 2025 and Q1 2026.
